Virajpet: Following allegations of unsafe food products being transported from Kerala, authorities conducted a thorough inspection at the Makutta checkpost in Virajpet on Friday.
The operation, led by Dr. Anil Dhawan, an officer from the Food Safety and Standards Authority, aimed to address public concerns raised after a video went viral on social media. The video highlighted the potential dangers posed by food items entering Kodagu from Kerala.
Recently, Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna, responding to these concerns and recent reports, convened an emergency meeting at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru to discuss food safety issues in Kodagu’s border regions, including Kutta, Makutta, and Perumbadi. Officials from Kodagu’s Food Safety and Quality Department presented alarming findings regarding imported food items. Some products were found to contain excessive artificial colouring and lacked essential information, such as production dates and manufacturer details.
During recent inspections, authorities collected 90 food samples from local shops, which were then sent to the Indian Academy of Dairy and Food Analysis Centre (IADFAC) laboratory for analysis. The test results confirmed that 31 of these samples were classified as unsafe, and an additional four were found to be of substandard quality.
Concerned about the implications for public health, Ponnanna engaged with relevant ministers and directed officials to act swiftly.
