Mysuru: Kodagu district has received ₹149.85 crore from the Karnataka government under the Gruha Jyothi scheme, which offers up to 200 units of free electricity per month to eligible households.
The amount was released to the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC), Mysuru, which serves Kodagu along with Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, and Chamarajanagar districts.
According to CESC, 1,54,290 domestic consumers in Kodagu have enrolled under the scheme and availed themselves of the benefit. The ₹149.85 crore reimbursement is part of the larger ₹1,995.18 crore released by the State government to CESC for power supplied under the Gruha Jyothi scheme from August 2023 to June 2025.
The highest allocation was made to Mysuru district, which received ₹872.14 crore for 9,00,148 consumers. Mandya followed with ₹393.69 crore for 4,80,349 consumers, while Hassan and Chamarajanagar received ₹393.22 crore and ₹186.28 crore respectively.
In total, 23,17,781 consumers across the five districts have benefited from the scheme so far, CESC said in a press release.
Apart from the domestic power subsidy, the government also released ₹6,717.79 crore to CESC for supplying free electricity to irrigation pump sets. This move is aimed at supporting the agricultural sector by reducing electricity costs for farmers.
The Gruha Jyothi scheme is one of the five key guarantees announced by the Congress government in Karnataka and it came into effect in August 2023.
