MADIKERI: A ₹12-crore project aimed at the scientific disposal of legacy waste in Kodagu district was officially launched recently under the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan scheme. The initiative covers three towns—Madikeri, Kushalnagar, and Virajpet.

The project was inaugurated at Subramanyanagar on the outskirts of Madikeri by Madikeri MLA Mantar Gowda and Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar. Speaking at the launch, Gowda stated that around 1.52 lakh tonnes of legacy waste have been identified for bioremediation. Of this, approximately 76,636 tonnes are from Madikeri alone.

“This project is a crucial step toward addressing the long-standing issue of accumulated waste and improving public health and the environment in our region,” Gowda said.

Yaduveer highlighted the role of Central support in the implementation of the project. “The Union government is funding 50% of the total cost under the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan scheme,” he said, adding that effective waste management is key to achieving cleaner and more sustainable urban spaces.

The project is expected to bring long-term environmental benefits and improve the quality of life for residents across the three towns.
