Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a government grant of ₹1 crore for the upcoming Chenanda Kodava Hockey Tournament, celebrating the Kodava community’s deep-rooted association with the sport.
Releasing the tournament’s logo at his Home Office ‘Krishna’ in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said, “Kodavas mean hockey, and hockey means Kodavas.” He lauded the community’s remarkable contribution to Indian hockey, noting that several players from Kodagu have represented the country at international levels, including the Asian Games. “They have brought immense pride and honour to the nation through their talent and dedication,” he added.

The Chief Minister commended the Kodava community for preserving its unique cultural identity while nurturing sporting excellence. “Kodava culture has retained its distinctiveness and continues to flourish. It is a matter of pride for our heritage,” he said.

Siddaramaiah announced that the State government would provide ₹1 crore for organising the event, which is scheduled to be held in May 2026. “I will also attend the tournament,” he assured.

The Kodava family hockey tournaments, unique to Kodagu district, have become a symbol of unity and sporting spirit among Kodavas, attracting participation from hundreds of families each year.
