Virajpet: Virajpet MLA and legal advisor to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, A.S. Ponnanna, has decided to curtail the use of police pilot vehicles provided to him within his constituency as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution.

Ponnanna has sent a note to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Kodagu, requesting that the police convoy usually provided to him during travel within the constituency be withdrawn. He reportedly cited the need to conserve fuel amid uncertainty surrounding fuel availability in the country and to support measures aimed at reducing environmental pollution.

The move comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal urging austerity measures to minimise fuel consumption and conserve foreign exchange. Following the Prime Minister’s appeal, several State governments and Union Ministers across the country have reportedly reduced the use of pilot vehicles and downsized official convoys.

Ponnanna, who was earlier provided with a police convoy while travelling within his constituency, is understood to have voluntarily opted to limit such arrangements in support of the broader fuel conservation initiative.
