Unique Felicitation: Couple with Six Children Receives Honor from Kodava Samaja

Madikeri: In a unique and heartwarming event, the Kodava community came together to felicitate Tathapanda Belliappa and Bojamma, a couple who have given birth to six children (five boys and one girl). The felicitation ceremony was organized by the Kodava Samaja Madikeri, highlighting the community’s efforts to address its declining population.

The Kodava community, a distinctive and small ethnic group in Karnataka’s Kodagu district, has been facing challenges due to a decreasing population. According to the 2011 census, the Kodava-speaking population was approximately 166,187, and they have been facing significant population decline. This decline has prompted Kodava Samaja to take proactive steps to encourage larger families and ensure the continuity of their unique cultural heritage.

During the felicitation event, the Madikeri Kodava Samaja presented the couple with a cash award of Rs 25,000. M.P. Muthappa, president of the Madikeri Kodava Samaja, emphasized the importance of such initiatives. "The population of our community is decreasing, and to encourage and create awareness among our community youngsters, we have felicitated the couple. The cash award will assist the couple in taking care of their children, and we hope it will inspire others in our community," he said.

The Kodava community is known for its rich cultural traditions, distinct language, and unique customs. Historically, they have been agriculturists, coffee planters, and soldiers. Despite their small numbers, the Kodavas have made significant contributions to various fields, including the Indian armed forces, sports, art, culture, journalism, cinema and politics. The community places a strong emphasis on family values, cultural preservation, and mutual support.
