Madikeri: Kodagu district, known for its lush coffee plantations, remains under a red alert as relentless rains are forecasted to continue until Wednesday morning. The persistent downpour has significantly increased water levels in local reservoirs, particularly the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Reservoir.
Recent heavy rainfall has led to a sharp rise in the KRS inflow. By Tuesday morning, the inflow into the reservoir had surged, prompting a reduction in the Harangi Dam’s outflow from 18,750 to 10,000 cusecs.
Over the past 24 hours, Kodagu recorded an average rainfall of 80.42 mm, a stark contrast to the 9.57 mm recorded on the same day last year. Since January, the district has received 1,268.50 mm of rain, more than double the 584.78 mm recorded during the same period last year.
Madikeri taluk received the highest rainfall at 106.43 mm, followed by Virajpet with 56.30 mm, and Somwarapet with 119.55 mm. Ponnampet and Kushalnagar taluks also experienced significant rainfall, recording 66.34 mm and 53.50 mm, respectively. Shanthalli saw an exceptional 230 mm, the highest in the district, while Bhagamandala recorded 172 mm.
Rainfall data from various hoblis in the past 24 hours includes: Madikeri 97 mm, Napoklu 70.20 mm, Sampaje 86.50 mm, Virajpet 52 mm, Ammatti 60.60 mm, Hudikeri 90.90 mm, Srimangala 73.40 mm, Ponnampet 60 mm, Balele 41.06 mm, Somwarpet 96.20 mm, Shanivarasanthe 78 mm, Kodlipet 74 mm, Kushalnagar 38 mm, and Suntikoppa 69 mm.
The heavy rains have caused extensive damage in the district, with one house severely damaged and eight others partially affected. Additionally, 86 electric poles were brought down by the storm, resulting in an estimated loss of ₹8.60 lakh for CESC. Efforts are underway to repair the damaged highway in Karthoji village within the Sampaje Hobli.
As of Tuesday evening, the KRS dam saw an inflow of 35,997 cusecs, with an outflow of 2,357 cusecs. The water level stood at 109.10 feet, approaching the maximum capacity of 124.80 feet.
Heavy rains in Kerala, the catchment area for the Kabini dam, have also caused a rise in inflows, reaching 29,310 cusecs by Tuesday afternoon. The outflow was 36,000 cusecs, causing partial submersion of the 16-pillared mantap in the Kapila River at Nanjangud. The Kabini dam's water level was recorded at 2,282.38 feet, close to its full reservoir level of 2,284 feet.
In Kodagu, the Harangi dam recorded an inflow of 8,764 cusecs by Tuesday evening. The outflow was adjusted to 10,000 cusecs, with the water level at 2,852.65 feet against a full reservoir level of 2,859 feet.
