Madikeri: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Kodagu Deputy Commissioner to submit a detailed report on efforts taken to curb pollution in the Cauvery and Lakshmana Theertha rivers. The directive follows a complaint filed by members of the Save Cauvery River organisation, who raised concerns over severe contamination caused by the discharge of untreated waste and sewage into the rivers from several towns and villages.

The complaint was subsequently forwarded to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department, who ordered an investigation and sought a comprehensive report. Meanwhile, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) conducted inspections and collected water samples from ten points along the Cauvery River.

Laboratory results revealed significant pollution levels, particularly from areas such as Bhagamandala, Napoklu, Murnad, Kondangeri, Siddapura, and Kudige, where untreated sewage and effluents were found contaminating the water.

Taking serious note of the findings, the SHRC has instructed the district administration to enforce strict measures to stop the inflow of waste into both rivers. The Commission has also asked the Deputy Commissioner to submit a compliance report on the progress of these preventive actions by April 27, 2026.
