Six Rescued from Floodwaters in Virajpet Amid Ongoing Heavy Rains in Kodagu

Rescue operations were conducted using boats to reach the affected area near Bethri in Kakotupurambu.

Virajpet: On July 30, rescue teams successfully saved six individuals who had become trapped in floodwaters in Kakotupurambu village, located in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district, Karnataka. The fire and emergency services received an urgent call at approximately 7:40 a.m., prompting immediate action.

Rescue operations were conducted using boats to reach the affected area near Bethri in Kakotupurambu. All six stranded individuals were safely transported to a secure location by the rescue teams.

Kodagu district has been experiencing relentless rainfall for the past ten days, leading to significant flooding. The Cauvery river and several rivulets are overflowing in numerous locations. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the district for the next 48 hours, indicating that the heavy rainfall is expected to continue.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on July 30, Bhagamandala in Madikeri taluk, where the Cauvery river originates, recorded 245 mm of rainfall. Rainfall was widespread across the district, with Sampaje receiving 185.5 mm, Napoklu 177.8 mm, Ammati 107.5 mm, Shanthalli 165 mm, Kudlipet 90 mm, Ponnampet 149 mm, Hudikeri 147.3 mm, Srimangala 136.4 mm, Balale 80 mm, and Suntikoppa 62 mm.

The Harangi reservoir in Kushalnagar reported an inflow of 12,960 cusecs and an outflow of 27,500 cusecs, contributing to increased inflow rates into the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir downstream. As of noon on July 30, the inflow into the KRS was 38,977 cusecs, while the outflow stood at 55,659 cusecs. The Kabini reservoir also experienced an inflow of 30,825 cusecs and an outflow of 24,667 cusecs.
