Virajpet: A 14-year-old schoolboy lost a finger after an unexploded firecracker went off in his hand at Kaikeri village in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district, highlighting the continuing risks posed by leftover fireworks.
The injured boy, identified as Pavan, a Class 7 student and a native of Devarapura Paisari, was visiting relatives at Kaikeri when the incident occurred. According to sources, Pavan noticed an unexploded firecracker lying outside the house and attempted to light it. The cracker suddenly detonated in his left hand, causing severe injuries to his fingers.
He was rushed to the district hospital in Madikeri, where doctors found that all the fingers on his left hand had sustained serious damage. One of the fingers had to be amputated due to the extent of the injury, while the remaining fingers were treated surgically. Doctors said the boy is currently under observation and his condition is stable.
Following the incident, the district president of the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj Organisation, Thenniyar Maina, visited the hospital and briefed Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister’s Legal Adviser A.S. Ponnanna, who is presently attending the legislature session in Belagavi.
Mr. Ponnanna directed officials to ensure that the child receives all necessary medical care free of cost. He also instructed the District Surgeon to refer the boy to specialised hospitals in Mysuru or Mangaluru if advanced treatment is required.
