Somwarpet: Ayatana Resort & Spa witnessed an unusual wildlife sighting on Wednesday after a rare giant earthworm measuring about 43 inches was found near a coffee estate trail in Kumaralli village of Somwarpet taluk.
According to Vishwanath, a local resident, the earthworm was discovered by the resort's team during a walk along the estate trail. The team carefully documented the remarkable find before allowing the animal to return safely to its underground habitat without disturbing it.
"A Giant Earthworm — 43 inches long, and that's without a full stretch. Longer than a cricket bat and thicker than your thumb. Our team spotted it near the coffee estate trail, carefully documented it, and let it return to its underground world. No disturbance, just respect," Vishwanath said.

Giant earthworms are among the lesser-known but ecologically significant inhabitants of the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot. Several species of giant earthworms are native to the Western Ghats, including parts of Kodagu, where the region's moist forests and coffee plantations provide ideal conditions for them. These earthworms play a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility by breaking down organic matter, improving soil structure, and enhancing nutrient cycling.
Wildlife experts note that such sightings are uncommon because giant earthworms spend most of their lives beneath the ground and usually emerge only during wet conditions, making them a rare sight even in biodiversity-rich landscapes like Kodagu.
