Madikeri: Opposition to the alleged commercialisation of land near the sacred Malama Betta, also known as Igguthappa Betta, has intensified across Kodagu, with residents and members of the Kodava community and the natives of the district voicing concern over social media and calling for government intervention.

The issue gained wider attention after The Kodagu Express reported regarding the protest by local residents on the sale of a large parcel of land near the revered hill, which is closely associated with the famous Padi Igguthappa Temple near Kakkabe in Madikeri taluk. The temple is one of the most important places of worship for the Kodava community and attracts devotees from across Kodagu.

Nestled amid the Western Ghats, the temple is located at the foothills of Malama Betta, a hill regarded as sacred by local residents. Villagers from Kakkabe, Nelaji and Peroor have already expressed strong opposition to any alleged commercial activity in the vicinity of the hill, citing concerns over its religious significance and ecological sensitivity.

According to residents, around 80 acres of land near the hill was recently sold by a local resident to buyers from outside the district. While no official proposal for development has been made public, villagers fear that the land could be utilised for commercial purposes, potentially affecting the sanctity of the sacred site and the surrounding environment.

Following The Kodagu Express report on the issue, a large-scale campaign opposing the alleged commercialisation has emerged on social media, with Kodagu residents and members of the Kodava diaspora from different parts of the world expressing concern and extending support to the local villagers.

Residents have unanimously opposed any alleged commercial development near the hill and have decided to approach government authorities seeking intervention and protection of the area.

During a meeting held on Sunday, villagers also resolved to convene a special gathering on June 20 to discuss the matter in greater detail and determine the next course of action.
