New Delhi: The Union Government has informed the Lok Sabha that no recent proposal has been received from the Karnataka government for the inclusion of Kodava/Kodavaru/Kodagaru communities in the Central List of Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Replying to a question raised by Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on 24 March 2026, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment stated that these communities are currently not part of the Central OBC list. It clarified that no proposal seeking their inclusion has been submitted by the State government in recent times.

The Centre further indicated that since no such proposal has been received, the question of examining or acting upon it does not arise at present. The reply also implies that there has been no recent assessment at the Central level regarding the impact of exclusion of these communities from OBC status in terms of access to reservation benefits in Central government jobs or competitive examinations.

Additionally, the Ministry reiterated that all inclusions and exclusions in the Central OBC list are processed based on proposals received from State governments and are subsequently reflected in records maintained by the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC).

The clarification comes amid ongoing demands from sections of the Kodava community seeking inclusion in the Central OBC list. However, the Centre’s response places the onus on the Karnataka government to initiate the process by submitting a formal proposal for consideration.
