MLA Ponnanna Seeks Cabinet Berth for Kodagu Based on Regional Balance

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s proposed dinner meeting with Ministers on October 13 has sparked speculation about a possible Cabinet reshuffle.

Madikeri: Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister’s legal advisor A.S. Ponnanna has reiterated the need for Kodagu district to be given representation in the State Cabinet, citing regional and district-level equality as the basis for his demand.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to the Kodagu District Hospital to check on the students injured in the recent fire accident at a school in Madikeri, Ponnanna emphasised that Kodagu has long been denied ministerial representation despite its political significance and contributions to the State.

He pointed out that former MLAs Appachu Ranjan and K.G. Bopaiah, who served five and four terms respectively, were overlooked by the previous BJP government. “Appachu Ranjan held a ministerial position only for a few months. It is unfair that Kodagu, with its long political history, has not had a consistent voice in the Cabinet,” Ponnanna remarked.

Highlighting the importance of equitable representation, he said, “In a democratic system, there should be no regional imbalance. Every district deserves its fair share of attention and development. In this regard, we have requested that Kodagu be allotted a Cabinet position.”

Responding to a question on the much-anticipated Cabinet reshuffle, Ponnanna said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had already confirmed that it would take place in November. “Since both the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister have stated that the reshuffle will happen next month, it is certain to take place,” he said.
