Madikeri: The Karnataka government is set to establish a mini airport in Kodagu district, with plans to acquire around 120 acres of flat land near Madikeri from private owners at prevailing market rates, according to MLA Manthar Gowda.

Speaking at a seminar on tourism organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), Gowda said that while land had earlier been identified at Chikka Aluvara near Kushalnagar, it was later found unsuitable for the project. “The government will proceed with the purchase once an appropriate flat area is identified near Madikeri,” he said, adding that heliports are being planned at four locations across the district to improve connectivity.

Highlighting issues in the tourism sector, the MLA said that many homestays in Kodagu are functioning without proper licences, leading to inconvenience for visitors. He called for stricter regulations to ensure safer and more organised tourism operations.

Gowda also noted that the Mysuru–Kushalnagar railway project is awaiting the state government’s approval. “Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna is coordinating with the state on this matter,” he said. Additionally, he announced that the Madikeri–Donigal road would be widened to facilitate smoother travel.

Regarding infrastructure works, the MLA mentioned that ₹50 crore had been sanctioned for road repair in Kodagu but added that heavy rainfall had delayed the execution.

Meanwhile, FKCCI president Uma Reddy urged the government to focus on strengthening micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Karnataka to reduce over-dependence on Bengaluru, thereby promoting balanced industrial growth in other regions of the state.
