Somwarpet: Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda has built a new house for the grieving family of Meena, a tenth-grade student who was brutally murdered in May last year. The house, constructed at a cost of ₹8 lakh, will be officially handed over to the family on Monday, June 9.
Fifteen-year-old Meena, a resident of Surlabbi in Madikeri taluk, was killed in a horrifying incident by a 32-year-old man, Onkarappa alias Papu, from the same village. The accused allegedly dragged Meena out of her home and killed her in the presence of her parents, Subramani and Muthakki. Reports stated that he beheaded her and discarded the body.
Meena had cleared her SSLC examinations, securing 52%. Her school had celebrated a 100% pass result, and the village had expressed pride in her achievement before the tragedy struck.
Dr. Gowda had visited the bereaved family shortly after the incident to offer condolences. During his visit, he noticed that the family lacked proper documentation for their dwelling and that the house was in extremely poor condition. “The family told me they didn’t have a proper home. That’s when I decided we would help them by building one,” Dr. Gowda said.
According to Kodagu Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan, the murder followed a troubling sequence of events. The family had reportedly fixed Meena’s engagement with the accused. When the child helpline was alerted, officials from the social welfare department intervened and advised the family to wait until Meena turned 18. However, hours after the officials left, the accused stormed into the house and committed the crime.
