Madikeri: The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts has announced the acquisition of an ultra-luxury resort in Kodagu, marking its entry into nature-led and wellness-focused hospitality. The property, located near Madikeri, will be relaunched as The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary later this year.

According to a release by Leela, the property spread across 76 acres of lush landscape amid coffee and spice plantations, the resort currently features 71 private villas. The company plans to expand the inventory to 90 villas in the first phase by adding 19 more units, signalling a significant investment in the region’s high-end tourism sector.

The acquisition coincides with The Leela’s 40th anniversary and introduces the brand’s first “Sanctuary” concept. Positioned in the Western Ghats, Coorg has emerged as a sought-after destination due to its scenic hills, plantations, waterfalls, and rich Kodava heritage, along with its proximity to Bengaluru and Mangaluru, release stated.

Anuraag Bhatnagar, Chief Executive Officer of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, said the move represents a strategic expansion into destinations with strong ecological and cultural value. He noted that the Coorg property aligns with the brand’s vision of offering immersive experiences centred on wellness, nature, and Indian hospitality.

The resort, which holds IGBC Platinum certification, has been designed to blend with its natural surroundings while incorporating local craftsmanship. Key features include four dining venues, a 27,000 sq. ft. wellness centre offering Ayurvedic and modern therapies, a seven-acre lake, and a private helipad. A four-bedroom presidential villa with a private pool and wellness facilities is also part of the development.

With this addition, The Leela’s portfolio will expand to 15 properties across 13 cities, with further growth planned in key leisure and pilgrimage destinations across India, according to release.
