Madikeri: The scorching heat of the drought in Karnataka has not only affected farmers and growers but has also dealt a severe blow to the tourism sector in Kodagu. With the onset of summer, the situation has worsened, leading to a collapse of tourism in the region.

Popular tourist destinations in Kodagu such as Dubare, Nisargadham, and others are facing acute water shortages, with many waterfalls drying up. Water sports activities have come to a halt in several places due to the lack of water, significantly impacting the entertainment options for tourists.

"After the end of the year, Kodagu tourism has completely collapsed and now the summer tourism is also being swallowed by the drought situation," said a homestay owner in the district. "During this time of year, tourism in Kodagu is typically at its peak, with all homestays, resorts, and hotels fully booked. However, this year, these accommodations are empty due to the election, lack of rain, and very hot weather,” he added.

The decline in tourism has had a significant impact on the local economy, with more than 300 registered hotels, restaurants, over 60 luxury resorts, and more than 4000 homestays facing a severe downturn. More than 1 lakh workers are employed in these industries, and they are all now facing an uncertain future.

“The situation is dire. The lack of tourists has not only affected our business but has also put a strain on the livelihoods of many families in the region," expressed another homestay owner.
