Somwarpet: A soldier from Malambi village in Somwarpet taluk, Kodagu district, is fighting for his life following a tragic accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. The mishap occurred on Tuesday when an army vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge.
P P Divin, the critically injured soldier, is currently undergoing treatment at a military hospital in Udhampur. Divin, the only son of the late Palangotu Prakash and Jaya, has served in the Indian Army for 10 years. His family has rushed to Udhampur to be by his side.
The accident claimed the lives of three soldiers, all hailing from Karnataka. The deceased have been identified as Subedar Dayanand Thirakannavar (44) from Belagavi, Lance Havaldar Anoop Poojary (33) from Kundapur, and Mahesh Marigond (25) from Mahalingpur in Bagalkot district. All three were members of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre based in Belagavi.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over Malambi village, where Divin was eagerly awaited. The soldier was set to return home soon for his wedding, scheduled for February.
A defence spokesperson stated that the cause of the accident was still being determined, but it was "possible that the driver lost control at a bend in the road." The incident took place in the Gharoa area when a convoy of six vehicles was travelling from Nilam Headquarters to Balnoi Ghora Post. One of the vehicles fell into a gorge approximately 300-350 feet deep, according to the spokesperson. The Army has, however, ruled out terrorism as a factor in the incident, according to a report in The Hindu.
