Kakkabe: The annual harvest festival of Kodagu, Puthari, will take place on 14 December, coinciding with the Rohini Nakshatra, as per the decision made at the Paadi Igguthappa Temple in Kakkabe.
A significant cultural event, Puthari marks the ceremonial first harvest of the district’s staple crop, paddy. The festival is observed during the Kodava month of Birchiyar, which aligns with November and December in the Gregorian calendar.
On 29 November, Friday representatives from 13 families and temple office-bearers convened to finalise the date and timings. The rituals were guided by an astrologers from Ammangeri, with the schedule based on traditional calendars and astrological principles.
The celebration at Paadi Igguthappa Temple will begin with the Nere kattuva ritual at 7:30 pm on 14 December. This will be followed by the reaping of the season's first paddy (Kadiru) at 8:30 pm, and the distribution of prasadam at 9:30 pm.
A precursor to Puthari, the Kalladcha Festival, will take place at the temple on 13 December, maintaining the district’s deep-rooted traditions.
After the temple ceremonies, households across Kodagu will perform the Nere kattuva ritual at 7:50 pm on 14 December. The harvesting of new paddy crops will follow at 8:50 pm, with prasadam distributed at 9:50 pm.
