Kodagu Rains: Check When Schools and Colleges are Closed Due to Heavy Rain

Madikeri: In view of the persistent heavy rainfall across Kodagu district, Deputy Commissioner Venkataraja has declared a holiday for all anganwadi centres, primary and high schools, and pre-university colleges on Thursday, June 26, as a precautionary measure.

The district has been receiving widespread rain for the past few days, with several areas reporting damage due to waterlogging, landslides, and overflowing streams. According to the district administration, Kodagu recorded an average of 60.92 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Among the worst-hit areas were Shanthalli (160 mm), Srimangala (146 mm), and Shanivarasanthe (112 mm).

The rising water levels in the Cauvery and Lakshmanatheertha rivers have heightened flood concerns, especially in low-lying villages and towns along the riverbanks. At Srimangala, the Lakshmanatheertha river has overflowed into farmlands and areca plantations, affecting agricultural activities. Meanwhile, the inflow into the Harangi reservoir increased significantly, prompting dam authorities to release 10,000 cusecs of water on Wednesday. With heavy rain forecast to continue, officials expect the outflow to rise further.

To assess the ground situation, Kiran Kumar, assistant commandant of the 10th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), visited Kodagu on Wednesday. He reviewed the preparedness of the NDRF team deployed in the district and held discussions with disaster management expert R.M. Ananya Vasudev. Kumar inspected landslide-prone areas and instructed the team to strengthen safety measures and ensure timely relief operations if needed.
