Kodagu Police Ban DJs for Madikeri Dasara, Urge Use of Traditional 'Valaga' Instead

In addition to the ban on DJs, the police have also prohibited the wearing of face masks that cover the entire face with different designs during the event.

Madikeri: As the vibrant Madikeri Dasara festival kicks off, the Kodagu police have introduced stringent measures to curb noise pollution and enhance security. Addressing the media at a Press Club event in Madikeri on Friday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramarajan K stated that the use of DJs and other loud music equipment during the festivities will be strictly prohibited.

"Excessive noise disrupts the peace, causing distress to children, senior citizens, patients, and pregnant women. We will not tolerate the use of such loud music, and violators will face strict action," Ramarajan said, urging organisers to instead invest in promoting local folk artists to enrich the cultural experience of the festival. He also suggested that, instead of DJs, festival organisers should feature Kodagu’s own traditional 'Valaga' music to celebrate the region's rich heritage.

In addition to the ban on DJs, the police have also prohibited the wearing of face masks that cover the entire face with different designs during the event, a measure aimed at maintaining public safety. SP Ramarajan further highlighted that around 1,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure security throughout the festival.

Madikeri Dasara, a celebration with over 100 years of history, is one of Kodagu's most significant cultural festivals. Known for its vibrant processions, decorated tableaux, and traditional performances, it draws large crowds from across Karnataka.

The festival, which coincides with Navaratri, is renowned for its "Mantapa" procession, where elaborate structures representing mythological scenes are paraded through the streets.
