Madikeri: The Kodagu district police have announced a complete ban on DJ music during the upcoming Ganesha festival. Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan clarified that there is no legal provision allowing DJ music either during the celebrations or processions.
Addressing members of various festival committees on Thursday(14 August 2025), Ramarajan said the police are organising a special awareness campaign to highlight the harmful effects of high-decibel sound systems. “I am not asking organisers to completely avoid music. However, extremely loud music disturbs the public and should be avoided,” he said, cautioning that violations of the directive will invite action.
Additional Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar echoed the sentiment, emphasising the need for responsible celebrations. “Festival committees must refrain from using DJ music through loudspeakers, as it disrupts the peace,” he remarked.
As part of the awareness drive, ENT specialist Dr. Srikanth delivered a presentation on the health risks associated with excessive noise. He explained that sounds exceeding 90 decibels can cause permanent damage to the eardrums and nervous system. “Prolonged exposure to loud noise can also lead to heart attacks, which may be fatal, and poses serious risks to infants,” he warned.
The police have urged organisers to opt for traditional and less intrusive forms of music to ensure that the celebrations remain both festive and safe for the community.
