MADIKERI: A 45-day vaccination campaign to curb foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in livestock is set to begin across Kodagu district on April 21, under the National Cattle Disease Control Programme.

At a preparatory meeting held in Madikeri, Deputy Commissioner Venkataraja directed officials to ensure smooth implementation of the initiative. Highlighting the economic impact of the disease, he underscored the need for collective action in eradicating FMD, which can severely disrupt rural livelihoods.

"FMD can inflict significant losses on farmers. Preventing its spread through timely vaccination is crucial for the well-being of our agricultural community," he said, urging coordinated efforts from all departments and stakeholders.

Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Lingaraja Doddamani, described FMD as a fast-spreading viral infection that affects cattle, buffaloes, and pigs. He reiterated that biannual vaccination is essential to maintain livestock health and prevent outbreaks.

According to officials, all calves above three months of age will be vaccinated. A booster dose will be administered between the third and fifth week after the initial vaccination. Doddamani also clarified that pregnant cattle can safely receive the vaccine without complications.

With Kodagu housing 76,920 livestock, the district administration has deployed 75 veterinary staff for the extensive immunisation effort. The vaccine will be given at no cost to livestock owners.

Authorities are appealing to farmers to cooperate with veterinary teams to ensure the campaign's success. Officials noted that the effort is crucial not only for animal health but also for protecting the livelihoods of farmers in the region.
