Madikeri: In an unusual meteorological event, Kodagu has recorded a temperature exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in the second week of August, marking a rare occurrence during the monsoon season.
On Wednesday, Kodagu also known as Coorg saw a peak temperature of 31 degrees Celsius. The mercury has been climbing since August 9, a significant departure from the usual August temperatures, which typically range from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Historical data, as reported by DH, shows that similar temperature spikes only occurred twice before, both in the last week of August—once in 2013 and again in 2020. This year, however, the temperature surge began at the start of the month.
Kodagu, traditionally known for its cooler temperatures during the monsoon, has experienced notable shifts in its climate pattern. Normally, August in Kodagu is characterized by cooler temperatures and misty weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Madikeri city recorded a high of 31.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
C.S. Patil, Director of the IMD Bengaluru center, attributed the unusual warmth to the dry conditions in the Arabian Sea, which have influenced the temperature rise in Kodagu, according to the report.
Looking ahead, the IMD has provided the following forecast for Kodagu over the next week:
August 16: Minimum 20°C, Maximum 30°C, generally cloudy with light rain.
August 17: Minimum 20°C, Maximum 30°C, generally cloudy with light rain.
August 18: Minimum 20°C, Maximum 30°C, sunny conditions expected.
August 19: Minimum 20°C, Maximum 29°C, sunny weather anticipated.
August 20: Minimum 20°C, Maximum 29°C, sunny conditions.
August 21: Minimum 20°C, Maximum 29°C, continued sunny weather.
August 22: Minimum 20°C, Maximum 29°C, sunny forecasted.
