Kodagu Author Mookonda Nitin Kushalappa Wins 2025 Bal Sahitya Puraskar

New Delhi: Kodagu-based author and engineer Mookonda Nitin Kushalappa has been awarded the 2025 Bal Sahitya Puraskar for English by the Kendra Sahitya Akademi for his book Dakshin: South Indian Myths and Fables Retold. The award was announced on 14 November in New Delhi. The Bal Sahitya Puraskar is a prestigious national honour conferred by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, recognising outstanding contributions to children’s literature.
Published by Puffin Books in 2023, Dakshin presents a vibrant retelling of myths and fables from southern India. Nitin’s writing is known for weaving together regional history and imaginative storytelling, offering young readers a fresh perspective on traditional narratives.
An engineer by profession, Nitin has authored several well-regarded works, including The Early Coorgs and The Gandhi of Kodagu. His longstanding interest in Coorg’s heritage and folklore shapes much of his literary output.
Nitin completed his education at Clarence High School, St. Joseph’s Pre-University College, CMR Institute of Technology, Kuvempu University, and Alliance University.
He is also a regular contributor to The Kodagu Express, enriching readers with thoughtful pieces on the region’s history, culture, and stories.
