Kodagu Administration Reviews Glass Bridge Projects, Focuses on Safety and Compliance

Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somasekhar visited both locations on Thursday to evaluate various aspects of the projects.

Madikeri: The Kodagu district administration has begun a detailed assessment of two glass bridge attractions located near Abbey Falls and Udothmotte, with authorities indicating that future decisions regarding their operation will be based on public safety considerations and adherence to applicable regulations.

Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somasekhar visited both locations on Thursday to evaluate various aspects of the projects. Speaking during the inspection, he stated that the administration would examine safety standards, legal approvals, and operational procedures before arriving at a decision regarding the facilities.

At the glass bridge situated near the Abbey Falls–Mandalpatti junction, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed documents related to permissions granted for the project, structural safety certifications, parking arrangements, crowd management systems, and ticket pricing. He instructed the operators to ensure strict compliance with all tourism-related guidelines and regulations.

During his visit to the glass bridge at Udothmotte, Somasekhar emphasised the importance of ensuring visitor safety at all times. He also pointed out that tourist activities should not obstruct normal vehicular movement, particularly given the limited parking infrastructure available in the area. Operators were advised to follow prescribed tourism norms without exception.

The Deputy Commissioner noted that access to both glass bridges had previously been restricted as a precaution during the monsoon season. He said the administration would reassess those restrictions and take an appropriate decision after considering the interests of visitors as well as the wider public.

Somasekhar also interacted with jeep operators at the Abbey Falls–Mandalpatti junction. He sought information regarding fare structures, vehicle permits, and driving licences, while directing operators to maintain safety standards and provide a hassle-free experience for tourists.

Later, he inspected a homestay near Kadagadalu in connection with a proposal seeking resort approval. The review covered land conversion records, Gram Panchayat permissions, police clearances, electricity connections, and other statutory requirements. He further examined security measures such as CCTV systems, guest records, and complaint registers, and instructed operators to maintain details of foreign visitors and share the information with local police in accordance with existing regulations.

Officials from the Tourism Department, Revenue Department, consultants, and representatives of the tourism establishments were present during the inspections.
