Bengaluru: In a significant move to boost healthcare, sports infrastructure, and research capabilities in the picturesque Kodagu district, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds the Finance portfolio, presented the state budget for the upcoming fiscal year on February 16.
One of the key highlights of the budget was the announcement of the establishment of an Integrated and Public Health Laboratory (IPHL) in Kodagu within the current year. This initiative aims to enhance healthcare facilities and diagnostic capabilities in the region, ensuring timely and accurate health services for the residents.
In a bid to strengthen the healthcare sector further, the Chief Minister unveiled plans to set up a cardiac unit in the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences. This unit will operate under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, fostering collaboration between the government and private entities to provide advanced cardiac care services to the local population.
Recognizing the importance of research and diagnostic capabilities, the government is set to establish a Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) within the premises of the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences in Madikeri. This facility will play a crucial role in the detection and monitoring of harmful, contagious, and viral infections, contributing to the overall health infrastructure of the district.
Additionally, in a boost to sports development, the government has allocated funds for the construction of a dedicated building for the sports hostel in Ponnampet. This initiative, with an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore, is expected to provide state-of-the-art facilities for aspiring athletes, fostering a culture of sports excellence in Kodagu.
