Ponnampet: A wild elephant displayed remarkable empathy and ingenuity on Saturday when it came to the aid of a fellow elephant trapped in a rail barricade at the Forest Department depot in Ponnampet taluk, Kodagu district.

Watch the video of this extraordinary moment here, a video captured by locals and forest officials shows the dramatic rescue, as a herd of seven wild elephants entered the depot after crossing a gate. Forest personnel promptly initiated efforts to guide the elephants back into the forest.

While most of the herd successfully navigated the barricade at the depot gate, one elephant found itself stuck, with its head wedged between the rails. It struggled for over a minute, attempting to free itself from the tight spot.

As forest staff monitored the situation from a safe distance and prepared for a rescue, another elephant from the herd stepped in to assist. Using its trunk, the compassionate elephant skillfully helped its trapped companion dislodge its head from the barricade.

Once free, both elephants returned safely to the forest, much to the relief of onlookers. "The quick action of the second elephant ensured the rescue was successful without human intervention," said officials from the Forest Department.

The video of the incident has been widely shared, showcasing the extraordinary intelligence and social bonds within wild elephant herds.
