Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner and Regional Transport Authority Chairman Venkataraja has announced an extension of the ongoing ban on the movement of heavy vehicles in the district until August 5. The order comes in light of continuous heavy rainfall and aims to ensure public safety and prevent traffic disruptions.
The restriction covers timber-laden trucks, sand-laden vehicles, goods carriers exceeding 18.5 tonnes, bullet tankers, cargo containers, long chassis vehicles with multiple axles, and articulated trucks.
However, the directive exempts vehicles essential for daily and emergency services. These include LPG and fuel tankers, milk delivery vehicles, school and college buses, public transport services, and government service vehicles, including multi-axle buses used for passenger transport.
The ban is being enforced under multiple legislations — the Karnataka Police Act, 1963, the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the newly introduced Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
To implement the order effectively, 24/7 monitoring will be carried out at checkposts set up at the Kushalnagar and Sampaje borders along National Highway-275, which runs through the district. Police personnel and Transport Department officials have been instructed to strictly enforce the ban and initiate legal proceedings against those who violate it.
The restriction was initially imposed from June 6 to July 5. With rains showing no signs of abating, authorities have decided to continue the ban for an additional month to minimise road hazards and manage traffic flow efficiently.
