Madikeri: Roads across Kodagu continue to remain in a poor state even months after the rain has receded, with several stretches in both Madikeri and Virajpet constituencies dotted with deep potholes. Although residents have repeatedly urged officials to begin repair work, the response on the ground has been slow. Now, district authorities have assured that restoration work will finally begin, following firm instructions issued by Kodagu district in-charge Minister N. S. Boseraju.
Chairing the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) review meeting on Friday, the minister directed officials to ensure that every pothole in the district is filled by December. The meeting, held in Madikeri, was attended by senior officers from various departments, along with Madikeri MLA Mantar Gowda and Virajpet MLA A. S. Ponnanna.
Minister, questioned the administration over the prolonged delay in taking up repairs despite the state having allocated funds well in advance. They pointed out that the works should ideally have commenced immediately after the monsoon ended, especially considering the severity of road damage witnessed across Kodagu.
PWD engineers informed the meeting that ₹7.44 crore has been released for the upkeep of state highways in the district, with repair work already initiated at 43 locations. They added that an additional ₹14.15 crore has been approved for improvements to major district roads, and tendering procedures are currently underway.
Officials also briefed the ministers on the progress of road works under various gram panchayats, stating that those repairs would be completed by next month.
Residents, however, remain frustrated. Commuters from several villages in Madikeri and Virajpet say that only temporary patchwork has been carried out so far, offering little relief. Many hope that the latest deadline will compel authorities to take up the long-pending repairs in a comprehensive and lasting manner.
