Ponnampet/Gonikoppa: The third day of the ongoing community march in Kodagu, aimed at preserving the Kodava community's cultural heritage and identity, has witnessed an overwhelming response from the public. Launched on Tuesday, the initiative has drawn participation from thousands, including senior citizens and individuals from different parts of the district.
Organised jointly by the Akhila Kodava Samaja, Federation of Kodava Samajas, Kodava Sahitya Academy, and other organisations, the march reached Ponnampet on Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, a tribute was paid to Diwan Cheppudira Ponnappa, the town's founder, with a ceremonial garlanding of his statue. Similarly, participants also honoured Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his statue in the town.

\Continuing its journey, the march proceeded towards Gonikoppal, where it was met with a warm welcome. Along the way, several Kodava families, linguistic communities, and organisations extended their support. Members of the Muslim community, including the Jamma Muslim, Kaniya, and Kembatti groups, greeted the marchers and distributed refreshments.
At Gonikoppal, Arvathoklu-based Frost & Floris Ice Cream Company distributed 10,000 ice candies to the participants. The march has served as a platform to celebrate Kodagu’s rich cultural legacy, with many participants dressed in traditional attire while showcasing folk songs and music along the route.

The movement stems from a growing concern over the perceived cultural marginalisation of the Kodava community and its declining representation in political affairs. However, the immediate spark for this mobilisation was the Kattemad Maha Mrityunjaya Temple incident, where local Kodavas in traditional attire were denied entry due to a dress code restriction. This decision was seen as an affront to Kodava customs, prompting several Kodava Samajas and organisations to unite in protest.
In response, they launched this peaceful march as a means to assert their cultural rights and ensure that Kodava traditions continue to thrive. The march has since gained momentum, drawing strong public support across the region.
