Codava National Council urges for equality and recognition on International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

In a fervent conclave, members of the CNC pledged to fight against all forms of discrimination faced by the Indigenous Codava Tribal Race

Murnad: The Codava National Council (CNC) observed the "International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination" on March 21, 2024, at Coffee Castle Coorg in Balmberi road of Murnad.

In a fervent conclave, members of the CNC pledged to fight against all forms of discrimination faced by the Indigenous Codava Tribal Race, emphasizing the need to preserve their identity, ethos, and self-esteem.

According a release by CNC , central to the discussions were the demands for Codava Geo-Political Autonomy under constitutional provisions, echoing the recommendations of the Constitution Review Commission of India in 2002. The CNC stressed the need for internal political self-determination rights, akin to measures implemented in other regions of India.

The CNC underscored the historical injustices faced by the Codava people, from colonial exploitation to post-independence marginalization. Despite being recognized as one of the tribes of India, Codavas have been systematically sidelined and discriminated against by successive governments.

The CNC outlined various forms of discrimination faced by Codava people, including political marginalization, cultural appropriation, and denial of basic rights. The community has been disrespected, ignored, and disregarded by state authorities, leading to a sense of alienation and injustice.

In a passionate plea, the CNC called upon the Indian government and the government of Karnataka to address the legitimate grievances of the Codava people. This includes granting statutory recognition under Scheduled Tribe status, safeguarding land and water rights, and ensuring political representation and participation.

The conclave concluded with a resolute commitment to continue the struggle for equality, recognition, and autonomy. Participants took an oath to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and freedom, invoking the spirit of the Constitution and the revered symbols of Codava heritage, according to CNC president NU Nachappa.
