Napoklu: Braving heavy rain, hundreds of Codavas gathered at Napoklu Bus Stand on Monday to form a peaceful human chain as part of the Codava National Council’s (CNC) seventh such demonstration. The apolitical event, spearheaded by CNC president N.U. Nachappa, reinforced the community’s longstanding demand for a separate code and column in the upcoming National Population Census and caste enumeration exercise scheduled for 2025-26.

Highlighting the significance of the demand, Nachappa said Codavas must assert their historical continuity in Codavaland, preserve their mono-ethnic indigenous identity, and seek constitutional recognition as a micro-community. He warned that anti-Codava forces might attempt to derail their movement, urging community vigilance and unity.

The CNC also reiterated its broader goals: geopolitical autonomy for Codavaland, Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification for Codavas, and special political representation in state and central legislatures. Drawing a parallel to the “Sangha” Assembly Constituency in Sikkim, which reserves a seat for the Buddhist monastic community, CNC demanded similar representation for Codavas during the 2026 delimitation process.

The programme ended with participants taking a symbolic oath pledging dedication to the Codava cause in the name of sacred elements such as the Cauvery River, sacrament gun, and the Constitution.
