Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC), led by its president N. U. Nachappa, paid floral tributes at Lakdikote on Friday to honour the bravery and sacrifices of Codava warriors who fought in the 3rd and 4th Anglo-Mysore Wars in the 18th century.

According to a release by CNC, the event marked a symbolic remembrance of the Codava community’s martial legacy and its alliance with the British East India Company during the wars against the Mysore Sultanate. The Kodagu Raja, Dodda Vira Rajendra, had formed a military alliance with the British to counter the expansion of Tipu Sultan’s rule.

Speaking on the occasion, Nachappa said the tribute was a way to reconnect with the community’s roots and to recognise the contributions of the Codava warriors who played a crucial role in shaping regional history. “Our ancestors displayed extraordinary courage in defence of their homeland, and it is our duty to keep their legacy alive,” he said.

The release stated that the 3rd Anglo-Mysore War (1790–1792), led by Lord Cornwallis, and the 4th Anglo-Mysore War (1798–1799), commanded by General Sir Arthur Wellesley, marked the end of Tipu Sultan’s reign. The Codavas’ participation alongside the British proved significant in determining the outcome of these battles.
