Coffee Production in India

India is the sixth-largest coffee producer in the world, with an annual output of around 3 lakh metric tonnes. The country primarily grows Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties. While Arabica is known for its mild flavour and higher market price, Robusta is hardier and yields more per acre. Coffee is mostly grown in shade, intercropped with spices like pepper and cardamom, making Indian coffee unique in flavour.

Coffee Production in Karnataka

Karnataka accounts for nearly 70% of India’s total coffee production. The coffee-growing districts of Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan are the major hubs, owing to their ideal climate and elevation. Karnataka produces both Arabica and Robusta, with a growing shift towards Robusta due to its higher resilience and market demand. The state also contributes significantly to India's specialty and export-oriented coffee segment.

Kodagu (Coorg) is often referred to as the "Coffee Bowl of India." With its rolling hills, heavy monsoons, and cool temperatures, it provides ideal conditions for high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans. Coffee estates here are often family-owned, and the region is known for its sustainable, shade-grown coffee interspersed with silver oak, pepper vines, and other native flora. Kodagu coffee is highly regarded both in domestic and international markets for its aroma, body, and flavour profile.
