MADIKERI: Coffee prices in Karnataka’s major growing regions—Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan—remained largely stable on Tuesday 22 April, with only minor fluctuations in some varieties.

Arabica parchment was priced between ₹26,500 and ₹27,200 per 50 kg, while Arabica cherry ranged from ₹15,500 to ₹17,250 per 50 kg. Robusta parchment continued to trade between ₹22,000 and ₹22,400 per 50 kg, and Robusta cherry was priced between ₹12,000 and ₹13,000 per 50 kg. Pepper prices also held firm at ₹730 per kg, according to latest price update from Karnataka Planters Association(KPA)

Karnataka, particularly the districts of Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan, accounts for more than 70% of India’s total coffee production. The state’s hilly terrain, shade-grown plantations, and unique agro-climatic conditions have long made it a cornerstone of India’s coffee industry. Of the two main coffee varieties grown here—Arabica and Robusta—Robusta occupies the larger area due to its higher resistance to pests and diseases.

India is the sixth-largest coffee producer globally, with the majority of its beans exported to Europe, Russia, and emerging markets in Asia. Unlike many coffee-producing nations, India predominantly grows its coffee under shade, often intercropped with spices like pepper, cardamom, and arecanut. This intercropping not only contributes to ecological sustainability but also adds complexity to the flavour profile of Indian coffee, making it highly sought-after in niche markets.

The pepper crop, which is often cultivated alongside coffee in Kodagu and parts of Chikkamagaluru, continues to command a steady price, reflecting consistent domestic demand and cautious export optimism.

With the harvest season coming to an end, traders and growers are now closely watching international price trends and the early signs of the upcoming monsoon, which will influence planting decisions and input costs for the next cycle. For now, market sentiment remains cautiously optimistic as both domestic consumption and export enquiries show signs of gradual recovery.
