Karnataka, which contributes over 70% of India’s total coffee production, continues to play a crucial role in shaping the domestic and export markets. The districts of Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan form the heart of the state’s coffee belt, with Kodagu alone accounting for nearly 40% of the output.

Currently, According to the Karnataka Planters’ Association, Arabica parchment is trading between ₹26,000 and ₹27,000 per quintal, while Arabica cherry prices range from ₹14,000 to ₹15,100. Prices for Robusta parchment stand at ₹19,000 to ₹20,000, and Robusta cherry is fetching between ₹10,500 and ₹10,850.

In Kodagu, where coffee and pepper are often intercropped under shade trees, farmers continue to face challenges such as erratic rainfall, increased labour costs, and the lingering impact of previous years’ fungal infections. Despite these issues, robusta remains the dominant variety grown in Kodagu’s low-lying areas, while arabica is more common in the higher altitudes of Chikkamagaluru and Hassan.

Meanwhile, black pepper, another major crop in these regions, is currently trading at ₹670 per kg, slightly down from last month. Kodagu and Hassan districts remain top producers of pepper in Karnataka, with fluctuations in global spice markets and domestic demand influencing prices.

Farmers in these hill districts are also calling for better minimum support prices, timely procurement by cooperatives, and solutions to mitigate climate-related impacts on coffee and pepper yield.
