Madikeri: The annual Cauvery Theerthodbhava, a sacred event marking the origin of River Cauvery, will be observed on October 17 at 1:44 PM at Talacauvery, Kodagu district. According to the Agasthya Muni temple authorities, the auspicious moment will occur during Makara Lagna, when water is believed to gush forth from the sacred spring, symbolising the manifestation of Goddess Cauvery in her divine form as Theertharoopini.
Every year, thousands of devotees gather at Talacauvery to witness the phenomenon, considered highly auspicious in Kodava culture and tradition. It is believed that taking a dip or even witnessing the rising of water on this day grants spiritual merit and blessings.
As part of the rituals leading up to the event, several muhurthas have been fixed:
Patthaya Akki Hakuvudu (placing rice for the register) on September 26 at 9:31 AM in Tula Lagna
Agnya Muhurtha on October 4 at 8:33 AM in Tula Lagna
Placement of Akshaya Patra on October 14 at 11:45 AM in Dhanur Lagna
Placement of the Offering Box on October 14 at 4:45 PM in Meena Lagna
Significance of Talacauvery
Talacauvery, situated on the Brahmagiri hills, is revered as the birthplace of the River Cauvery, which is not only a lifeline for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu but also holds immense cultural and spiritual value. The river is worshipped as a mother goddess by the Kodavas and by millions across South India.
The Cauvery Theerthodbhava, held annually in October, marks the river’s symbolic rebirth, renewing faith among devotees and reinforcing the deep connection between the river, the land, and the people who depend on it.
