Madikeri: As of February 4, 2025, the price of black pepper in Karnataka stands at ₹650 per kg, according to the Karnataka Planters’ Association.

Kodagu, also known as Coorg, is the leading black pepper-producing district in Karnataka, with 8,845.6 hectares dedicated to its cultivation.

In 2013-14, Karnataka recorded a production of 8,048 metric tonnes of black pepper, covering 28,182 hectares. The key pepper-growing districts in the state include Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi.

Black pepper is traditionally cultivated as an intercrop alongside coffee and areca nut plantations in Kodagu and other pepper-growing regions of Karnataka.

In recent years, unpredictable weather patterns have posed significant challenges for Kodagu’s pepper farmers, affecting the vines and raising concerns over declining yields.

However, the recent increase in black pepper prices brings some relief to growers. The higher market rates may help compensate for losses caused by climate-related production setbacks. To sustain black pepper cultivation in the long run, it is essential to address climate challenges and equip farmers with adaptive strategies.
