BJP Members Burn Effigies in Virajpet, Police Register Case Against 30 Protesters

The Virajpet police have registered a case against all 30 individuals involved in the effigy burning.

Virajpet: In a dramatic demonstration against the recent fuel price hike by the Karnataka government, BJP members staged a protest in Virajpet on Thursday, culminating in the burning of effigies of prominent state leaders. The effigies of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Virajpet MLA A S Ponnanna were set alight, symbolizing the BJP’s vehement opposition to the hike.

The protest, which saw significant participation from BJP supporters, included BJP MLC Suja Kushalappa among the 30 leaders present. The Virajpet police have registered a case against all 30 individuals involved in the effigy burning.

The event has sparked widespread condemnation across Kodagu district, particularly among Congress leaders and other local residents. Critics argue that the manner of the protest was inappropriate and disrespectful. “Burning effigies, especially depicting them as dead bodies, is not an acceptable way to express dissent,” said Ajjinikanda Mahesh Nachaiah, President of Karnataka Kodava Sahithya Academy.

Many from various quarters in Kodagu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that while peaceful protests are a democratic right, the method chosen by the BJP was in poor taste and incited unnecessary tension.
