50 Children in Kodagu Suffering from Severe Malnutrition

In Kodagu district, 264 children under the age of five are suffering from moderate malnutrition, with 50 children severely affected.

Madikeri: In Kodagu district, 264 children under the age of five are suffering from moderate malnutrition, with 50 children severely affected, according to Dr Madhusudhan, the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) officer for Kodagu.

Speaking at a recent event organised by the Health and Family Welfare Services Department in Madikeri, Dr Madhusudhan emphasised the importance of providing proper and healthy food to combat malnutrition in children. "In recent years, the number of children below five years suffering from malnutrition has increased due to lifestyle changes, unhealthy diets, and other factors," he said.

He stressed that the government is conducting health check-ups for children under five at least once every three months to monitor their growth and wellbeing. "It is crucial to ensure that children receive a nutritious diet, including leafy vegetables, fruits, millets, pulses, and dairy products. These foods help meet their daily nutritional requirements and support overall development," Dr Madhusudhan added.

The RCH officer also called on parents and caregivers to be more vigilant about their children's diets and to avoid processed and junk food, which are contributing to the rise in malnutrition cases. He urged the public to make use of government-run nutrition programmes and health camps to access free check-ups and nutritional support.

The health department in Kodagu is working with local communities to raise awareness and ensure children receive the essential nutrients needed for healthy growth.
