Ponnampet: A 63-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Monday morning in Biruga village, located within the Ponnampet forest range of Kodagu district, forest officials reported.

The victim, identified as Ayyamada Madaiah, was on his routine morning walk when a wild tusker suddenly emerged from a nearby coffee estate and attacked him. Madaiah died on the spot due to head injuries, despite immediate attempts by villagers to save him.

The incident prompted protests from villagers, who accused forest officials of neglecting the ongoing threat posed by wild elephant attacks. Although forest officials intervened to ease the tensions, villagers expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of long-term solutions to the issue.

Kodagu has seen a troubling trend of human deaths caused by wild elephants, with the recent incident being the sixth since January.

Madikeri Division wildlife wing deputy conservator of forests (DCF) Bhaskar Raj said, "We have established an elephant task force in Kodagu to monitor villages near forests. We received permission from the state chief wildlife warden to capture and train a rogue tusker responsible for two deaths in the Shanivarasanthe region. The effort to capture tuskers has been ongoing for the past four days, and we intend to request permission to capture the elephant involved in this latest incident."

The autopsy of Mr Madaiah was carried out at the Ponnampet taluk government hospital, after which the body was handed over to his family. The officials noted that Mr Madaiah's family would receive a compensation of ₹15 lakh.
