Madikeri: Panic gripped residents of Ibnivalvadi village in Kodagu after a tiger was sighted in the area, barely two kilometres from Madikeri town.

The big cat was spotted in a coffee estate belonging to Sandeep Ponchettira, a local resident. Its movement was captured on a CCTV camera installed on the premises, providing visual confirmation of its presence.

Following the sighting, Forest Department personnel visited the spot and began assessing the situation. Officials said there had been earlier reports of movement of a tiger within a 7–8 km radius, though there was initial confusion over whether the animal was a tiger or a leopard.

Villagers now say it has been confirmed to be a tiger, heightening concerns in the locality. Residents have urged the government to take immediate steps to capture the animal and prevent any untoward incidents.

Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda has appealed to villagers to remain cautious and avoid venturing out alone, especially during early morning and late evening hours. He has also directed the Forest Department to initiate immediate action to track and capture the tiger.

Authorities are expected to intensify surveillance in the area.
