Madikeri: A tiger died after being caught in an illegal snare at a plantation in Kodagu district, raising fresh concerns over wildlife safety along forest fringes, forest department officials said on Tuesday. The incident occurred at Srimangala, close to the Nagarahole forest landscape, an important tiger habitat.

Following the incident, Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Eshwar Khandre chaired an emergency review meeting in Belagavi to assess the situation. During the meeting, the Minister held discussions with senior forest officials from Mysuru district and issued a series of instructions aimed at preventing similar incidents.

Mr. Khandre directed forest authorities to intensify awareness campaigns among residents living along forest boundaries, particularly plantation workers and local communities. He stressed the need to educate people about the legal consequences of causing injury or death to wildlife through the use of snares and other illegal traps.

The Minister also instructed officials to constitute special teams in all forest ranges to carry out regular and systematic searches for snares and other traps along forest borders and vulnerable corridors. He said strict legal action must be taken against those found responsible for the tiger’s death.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force Meenakshi Negi, Chief Wildlife Warden P.C. Ray, Principal Secretary Manoj Kumar and other senior officials attended the meeting.
