Kodagu: A Premier Coffee-Growing Region
Kodagu, widely referred to as Coorg, is a scenic district in Karnataka, India, celebrated for its verdant landscapes and thriving coffee estates. The region plays a crucial role in India's coffee production, contributing significantly to the country’s exports.

The district specializes in cultivating two primary coffee varieties—Arabica and Robusta. Arabica, admired for its mild taste and fragrant aroma, flourishes in the high-altitude zones of Kodagu. Robusta, recognized for its bold flavor and elevated caffeine content, is extensively grown at lower elevations. The region’s distinct climatic conditions—mist-laden mornings, abundant rainfall, and nutrient-rich soil—make it ideal for coffee farming. Kodagu’s coffee plantations often integrate intercropping practices with pepper, cardamom, and areca nut, promoting biodiversity while providing additional revenue to farmers. This traditional shade-grown cultivation method not only preserves the ecosystem but also enhances the coffee’s distinct taste.
Reasons Behind the Price Surge
Global Supply Constraints: Unfavorable climatic conditions in leading coffee-producing nations like Brazil have led to diminished yields, restricting international supply.
Rising Demand: A growing preference for coffee, particularly in emerging economies, has escalated consumption, pushing prices higher.
Farmer Sentiments and Challenges
Coffee cultivators in Kodagu, along with those in Chikmagalur and Hassan, are optimistic about the favorable pricing trends. Many are choosing to withhold their produce in anticipation of further price appreciation in the coming weeks. However, persistent challenges such as unpredictable weather fluctuations, labor shortages for harvesting, and disturbances caused by wildlife continue to pose significant hurdles for coffee growers in the region.
