Rainfall Lessens in Kodagu, Yet Destruction to Electricity Infrastructure Persists

The continuous rain has wreaked havoc on the district's electricity infrastructure, with approximately 84 electric poles damaged or uprooted since Friday.

Madikeri: The intensity of rainfall in Kodagu has decreased over the past few hours, providing some relief compared to the heavy downpour experienced over the past few days.

The continuous rain has wreaked havoc on the district's electricity infrastructure, with approximately 84 electric poles damaged or uprooted since Friday. Since April, a total of 1,791 electric poles and 43 transformers have been damaged due to rain, floods, and landslips. This has resulted in significant losses for the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC), which has incurred damages amounting to ₹1.82 crore.

Madikeri and Gonikoppal have been the hardest hit, with 471 and 470 electric poles damaged, respectively, since April. In the last 24 hours alone, the destruction includes 25 poles in Madikeri, 9 in Gonikoppal, 6 in Virajpet, 30 in Somwarpet, and 14 in Kushalnagar. The estimated total loss from these damages is ₹1.7 crore. Additionally, 43 transformers have been reported damaged across the district.

The ongoing efforts to restore electricity in the affected areas are challenging, given the extent of the damage. CESC is working diligently to repair and replace the damaged infrastructure to ensure the resumption of normalcy for the residents of Kodagu.

Despite the reduced rainfall, the impact on Kodagu's electrical grid highlights the need for robust infrastructure capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions, which are becoming increasingly common.
