Madikeri: Nestled in the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary near Madikeri, the picturesque Mandalpatti Peak is one of Kodagu’s most sought-after tourist destinations. Located at an altitude of around 4,050 feet above sea level, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Western Ghats and offers breathtaking views of rolling shola grasslands and forested valleys. The viewpoint, particularly popular for its spectacular sunrise and sunset vistas, attracts visitors from across Karnataka and beyond.

However, despite its natural charm, the journey to Mandalpatti remains far from pleasant. The road leading to the peak is in a deplorable state, riddled with potholes and uneven stretches. What should be a short and refreshing drive from Madikeri and further to peak often turns into a bumpy and exhausting experience.

Locals and visitors alike have voiced concerns about the lack of proper road infrastructure, which not only dampens the travel experience but also poses safety risks, especially during the monsoon season.

Adding to tourists’ woes are the exorbitant charges levied by jeep operators, who provide the only feasible transport to the peak due to the rough terrain. A short approximately 5-km ride can cost as high as ₹2500 per jeep, making it one of the most expensive short-distance trips.

Many visitors have expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of regulation of these services, urging the district administration to review and standardise the fares.

While Mandalpatti continues to mesmerise with its panoramic landscapes, the poor connectivity and high transport costs have raised questions about the management of tourism in one of Kodagu’s most iconic locations.
