Madikeri/Gonikoppa: The centuries-old Madikeri Dasara commenced on Monday evening with the grand Karaga Utsava at Pampinakere, as hundreds of devotees thronged the venue to witness the age-old tradition. The festival, considered one of the most vibrant cultural celebrations of Kodagu, opened with rituals dedicated to the four Shakthi Goddesses believed to guard the town.

According to legend, Madikeri is protected by four presiding deities-Kunduru Motte Chowti Maariamma (revered as the eldest), Dandina Maariamma, Sree Kote Maariamma, and Sree Kanchi Kamakshi. On the first day of Navratri, the idols were brought together at Pampinakere, where special pujas were offered before the temple priests carried the sacred ‘Karagas’ to begin their ceremonial journey across the city.

The area surrounding Pampinakere was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Priest P.P. Chami, who has been serving for 49 years, led the Karaga of Kunduru Motte Chowti Maariamma. The Dandina Maariamma Karaga was taken by P.A. Umesha, a senior priest performing the ritual for over five decades. P.B. Aneesh carried the Karaga of Sree Kote Maariamma, while U.P. Umesh took up the responsibility of Sree Kanchi Kamakshi.

The auspicious rituals were attended by Kodagu district in-charge minister N.S. Boseraju, Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda, and former MLAs Appachu Ranjan and K.G. Bopaiah, along with several local leaders.

Meanwhile, the Gonikoppal Dasara also began on a traditional note, with the Shakthi Goddess ceremoniously installed at the Freedom Fighters’ Bhavan, marking the start of the Gonikoppal Janotsava.

Historical Significance of Madikeri Dasara:

Madikeri Dasara, which traces its roots to the 17th century during the reign of the Haleri kings, has evolved into a blend of devotion and culture. Initially started as a simple observance of Navratri with Karaga processions, the festival gradually grew into a 10-day spectacle. Today, it is renowned not only for the Karaga Utsava but also for the dazzling Mantapa processions featuring massive illuminated structures depicting mythological stories.

Steeped in heritage and faith, Madikeri Dasara continues to symbolise the spiritual strength and cultural unity of Kodagu, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists every year.
