Virajpet: Zoo Abhi, a 21-year-old kumki elephant used in elephant capture operations, died at the Mathigodu elephant camp on Sunday evening, Forest Department officials said.
The elephant had been part of operations to capture and manage wild elephants in the region and had assisted the Forest Department in several missions. Officials said Zoo Abhi had been suffering from severe leg pain for the past six months and had been undergoing treatment under the supervision of veterinarians.
Despite continued care, the elephant succumbed to its condition on Sunday evening at the camp.
A post-mortem examination was conducted by veterinarian Dr. Ramesh to determine the exact cause of death, officials said.
Forest Department staff performed the last rites for the elephant on Monday in the presence of department personnel. The death of the kumki elephant has saddened staff and mahouts at the camp, as Zoo Abhi had played an important role in elephant management operations.
Senior forest officials, including the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) and other officials, visited the camp following the elephant’s death and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials said further details would be known after the post-mortem report.
